Strengths: The National Library of Scotland's Manuscripts Division holds material relating to Scotland and to the activities of Scots throught the world. Holdings represent all periods from the medieval onwards, all subject areas, with few geographic restrictions. Manuscripts range from historical documents, family papers and archives of organizations. The main material held by Manuscripts Division of a missionary-related nature are the archives of the Church of Scotland Board of World Mission and Unity, the Free Church of Scotland Foreign Missions Board, the United Presbyterian Church (Scotland), and the Scottish Missionary Society; the Division also holds several sets of personal papers of Scottish missionaries.

Access conditions:

A National Library Readers ticket, plus a manuscripts ticket, are required for admission to the Manuscripts Division. Please contact the Library for information on suitable evidence of identity required to obtain a Readers ticket.

The Library offers a wide range of copying services, though certain restrictions may apply due to reasons of copyright or preservation.

The Manuscripts Division is accessible by wheelchair.

Opening hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 09.30-20.30; Wednesday 10.00-20.30; Saturday 09.30-13.00. Closed for the first week in October.
