Strengths: The Edinburgh University Library's unbroken existence since 1580 and its status as a legal deposit library has led to the amassing of a large number of early printed books on many subjects, as well as a substantial and wideranging archival collection, which includes mediaeval, literary and oriental manuscripts, geological, medical and historical material, especially relating to Scotland and the Edinburgh University, and papers relating to Africa. It is the Africa Papers in particular that are of relevance to the field of mission studies, containing as they do the personal papers of many missionaries active during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
