General Synod Board of Mission and Unity

Administrative/Biographical history: The Board was set up as an advisory committee of the General Synod in January 1972 to continue the work formerly undertaken by the Missionary and Ecumenical Council of the Church Assembly. The functions specified by the Board's constitution included: interpreting the nature and extent of the Church's responsibilities in the fields of mission and unity; to be a link between General Synod and other churches and missionary societies; to be a link between General Synod and various ecumenical councils and conferences.
Immediate source of acquisition: The archive was transferred to the Church of England Record Centre with the records of the General Synod, however the date of acquisition is unknown.
CONTENT AND STRUCTURE
Scope and content/abstract: The Archive comprises the administrative records of the Board and its committees, including the Executive Committee, the Home Committee, the Faith and Order Advisory Group, the Committee on Roman Catholic Relations and the Inter-Faith Consultative Group. The archive also contains the papers of the Mission Theological Advisory Group, appointed jointly by the Board and Partnership for World Mission. The records include minutes, financial papers, reports, correspondence, publications and photographs.
System of arrangement: The archive has been divided into seven sections: The Board and its Committees; the Anglican Communion; Missionary Papers; Ecumenical Papers; Relations with the British Council of Churches; Relations with the World Council of Churches; Overseas Papers.
