CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The Council was established in 1921 by the Church Assembly to take the place of the Central Board of Missions; in 1951 it was renamed the Overseas Council. In 1963, the body was joined with the Council for Ecumenical Co-operation to form The Missionary and Ecumenical Council of the Church Assembly.

Custodial history:

Immediate source of acquisition: The archive was transferred to the Church of England Record Centre with the records of the General Synod, however the date of acquisition is unknown

CONTENT AND STRUCTURE

Scope and content/abstract: The archive comprises the Council records and those of its sub-committees including the Executive, Home Base, Education, Finance, Youth, St Andrewstide Literature, Anglo-African, Home, Policy and Regional Committees. The records include minutes, financial records, correspondence, surveys, publications and photographs.

System of arrangement: The archive is divided into five sections: the Council and its committees, the Anglican Communion, the missionary societies, overseas papers and publications.
