United Boards of Missions of the Provinces of Canterbury and York
Name of creator(s): Province of Canterbury | Board of Missions | 1887- Province of York | Board of Missions | 1890- Church of England | United Boards of Missions | -1908 Church of England | Central Board of Missions | 1908-1921
The Board of Missions of the Province of Canterbury was established in 1887, followed three years later by a similar Board for the Province of York. Thereafter, the boards held joint meetings, and in 1895 they formed the United Boards of Missions of the Provinces of Canterbury and York. The body changed its name to the Central Board of Missions in December 1910.
The Board of the Province of Canterbury was established to encourage engagement with missionary work and to explain the Church's principles on the subject; to provide advice to colonial churches and missionary societies; and to issue reports on 'the spiritual wants of heathen countries'. It appears that the terms of reference did not change significantly when the Boards of the two provinces united.
