Administrative/Biographical history: Born in 1883 Lt-Colonel Leonard Woodward was previously a grocer's assistant before becoming a Salvation Army officer, with his wife Maggie (nee Lowe), in 1903. Together they served in Irish and UK corps until 1916 when they were transferred to the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) where they served in Java and Sulawesi (Celebes) for 33 years. During 1942-1945 the Woodwards were interned with other Salvation Army officers in Makassar, a Japanese camp for prisoners of war. They returned permanently to the UK in June 1949. Lt-Colonel Woodward died 19 July 1950; in his Salvation Army tribute he was described as a 'missionary extraordinary' for his many years spent bringing Christ to indigenous peoples.
