Records of the Bishop Tugwell Diocesan FundIDENTITY STATEMENT
CONTEXT Name of creator(s): Administrative/Biographical history: The Bishop Tugwell Diocesan Fund was established in 1895 following an appeal by Bishop Herbert Tugwell, as Bishop of West Equatorial Africa, for a separate independent fund to be put at his disposal in order to promote branches of his work which could not be met from the funds of the Church Missionary Society. A Committee was appointed to act as trustees, to collect contributions and to administer the fund. Following diocesan reorganisation the fund was used to assist work in the dioceses of Lagos and the Niger in Western Equatorial Africa. Custodial history: Deposited with the CMS by the Secretaries of the Nigerian Fellowship, March 1976; transferred on permanent loan to the Special Collections Department by the CMS in the 1980s Immediate source of acquisition: CONTENT AND STRUCTURE Scope and content/abstract: This collection comprises official records of the Bishop Tugwell Diocesan Fund which includes committee minutes, financial correspondence, circulars, and annual reports, 1895-1948. Other material includes printed material and leaflets relating to diocesan work in West Africa and photographs of missionaries and church buildings System of arrangement: This collection forms part of the Church Missionary Society Unofficial Papers.
