CONTEXT Name of creator(s): Allen, Geoffrey Francis (1902-1982) Administrative/Biographical history: Geoffrey Francis Allen was born on 25 August 1902, the son of John Allen and Mabel Allen (née Saunders). He was educated at Rugby School, University College, Oxford and Ripon Hall, Oxford. He was Liverpool Intercollegiate Secretary of the Student Christian Movement (1926), Curate of St. Saviour’s, Liverpool (1927), Chaplain of Ripon Hall, Oxford (1928), Fellow and Chaplain of Lincoln College, Oxford (1930-35), and Union Theological College, Canton (1935). In 1941 he became Deputy Provost of Birmingham Cathedral; he was the Secretary of the National Christian Council of China and Chaplain to British embassy, Chungking (1942-44), the Archdeacon of Birmingham (1944-47), the Bishop in Egypt (1947-52), Principal of Ripon Hall, Oxford (1952-59) and Bishop of Derby (1959-69). He married Madeline Gill in 1932, and died on 8 November 1982. Custodial history: In the possession of Bishop Allen.
