Reuter LettersIDENTITY STATEMENT
CONTEXT Name of creator(s): Reuter, Sophie Dorothea (1860-1891) Administrative/Biographical history: Sophie Dorothea Reuter was born in 1860 in Norway and was a member of the Lutheran Church. In 1885 she and her friend Anna Jakobsen went as the two first Norwegian missionaries to China where she served until her death in 1891. In 1888 in Shanghai she married her fellow missionary, Stanley P. Smith, one of the 'Cambridge Seven'. Her only son, Algernon Stanley Smith, was a missionary in Ruanda. Custodial history: Immediate source of acquisition: Copies of letters held by Sue Anderson, Reuter's great granddaughter. CONTENT AND STRUCTURE Scope and content/abstract: Letters from Sophie Reuter to her family dated from Lunyang-fu and Lu-Cheng, China, 1889 to 1891 and some background articles on her life.
