Billington PapersIDENTITY STATEMENT
CONTEXT Name of creator(s): Billington, Roy (1870-1951) Administrative/Biographical history: Dr Roy Billington went to Uganda as a medical missionary for the Church Missionary Society (CMS) in 1937 and in 1950 he was appointed Medical Superintendent of the Mengo Hospital of the Church of Uganda. He held this post until 1970 when he became CMS representative in Uganda and advisor on health and welfare to the church in Uganda. In 1972 he returned to England to become CMS Medical Secretary. Custodial history: Immediate source of acquisition: Donated by Dr Billington in the mid 1990s, CONTENT AND STRUCTURE Scope and content/abstract: Booklets and photocopies of articles relating to the work of medical missionaries in Uganda, in particular at the Church Missionary Society Mengo Hospital in Kampala. There is particular reference to the pioneering work of Dr Albert Cook. There are also a few booklets concerned with the more general issue of Third World Health and Christian responsibility. System of arrangement: One folder of articles and booklets on Uganda and one folder on general aspects of health in the developing world. ACCESS AND USE Language: English.
