CONTEXT
Name of creator(s): Brown, Alexander
Administrative/Biographical history: Dr Alexander Brown was a medical missionary from Aberdeen who worked at the Livingstonia mission (named after the missionary and explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873)) in Malawi during the early years of the twentieth century.

Immediate source of acquisition: The collection was presented to the National Library of Scotland in 1986.
CONTENT AND STRUCTURE
Scope and content/abstract: The collection contains photographs, many annotated in English, of subjects including:
missionary habitations and churches in locations including Bandawe (Malawi) and Chipata (Zambia);
portraits of non-Africans including other missionaries, including an unspecified member of the reknowned Moffat missionary family (possibly John Smith Moffat (1835-1918));
several photographs of the monument marking the grave of the missionary David Livingstone (1813-1873);
indigenous peoples including lay missionary workers such as schoolteachers and dispensary workers, (including pictures of missionary classes),and their habitations, surroundings and livestock, including scenes at Kasungu, Chipata, Luangwa;
landscapes and portraits contained in an enveloped labelled "At home" (presumably Scotland, and appearing not to be located in African settings).
System of arrangement: The collection consists of one photograph album, plus two envelopes containing loose photographs, labelled "Africa: Nyasaland, N. E. Rhodesia" and "At home".
